摘要:
In this talk, I will present the discovery of a massive dormant black hole, Gaia BH3, in the Milky Way using high-precision astrometric data from the Gaia mission (Gaia Collaboration; Panuzzo et al. 2024, A&A, 686, L2). Gaia BH3 is the third dormant stellar-mass black hole identified in our Galaxy using Gaia data and is currently the most massive one known of stellar origin. The astrometric binary solution revealed the presence of a 32.7 ± 0.8 M⊙ black hole orbiting a giant star with a period of 11.6 years, confirmed through radial-velocity measurements as well. Based on the Galactic orbit and low metallicity of the system, the authors argued for its possible association with the Sequoia halo substructure or the ED-2 stellar stream. I will also discuss the ongoing efforts to understand the formation history of Gaia BH3 and to search for other dormant stellar-mass black holes using Gaia astrometry.
